If you've ever participated in one of our team building events, you probably experienced our special tradition known as the "Aloha Award." This is when we highlight one special person and present them with the sacred Kukui Nut Lei. But have you ever wondered why we decided to do this - and why we specifically choose the Kukui Nut Lei?

The Cultural Significance of the Kukui Nut Lei

Our owner, Darlynne Reyes Menkin, has family roots in Hawaii. In both their personal and professional lives, Darlynne and her husband Marc make it a priority to embrace the 'Aloha Spirit' in everything they do. During our events, they felt it was important to recognize individuals who exemplify a caring and positive attitude so they created the "Aloha Spirit."

In Hawaiian culture, Kukui means "light" and Ancient Hawaiians used the oil and candlenuts from the Kukui Nut tree to produce light by making candles that could burn for hours. Beyond its practical use for illumination, Hawaiians also valued the Kukui Nut tree for its versatility. They used the tree's bark to create dye for their sacred clothing.

Symbolizing Renewal, Hope and Light

Over generations, the Kukui Nut has come to embody much more than just physical illumination. It represents renewal, hope, and guidance—values deeply woven into the fabric of Hawaiian culture. Just as the Kukui Nut brought light to the Hawaiian people in a literal sense, it also symbolizes enlightenment, positivity, and clarity in a spiritual and emotional context.

In modern Hawaiian tradition, the Kukui Nut Lei is often given as a token of honor and respect. When draped around someone's neck, it signifies admiration and gratitude for the recipient's unique contributions and the positive influence they have on others.

Honoring the Light Within

When we present someone with a Kukui Nut Lei at one of our team building events, we are thanking them for being a "light" in this world. Perhaps this individual demonstrated a positive attitude during our program OR maybe they stood out by continuously supporting & encouraging their teammates during challenging activities. Whatever the reason, receiving the Kukui Nut Lei is a powerful affirmation of the individual's meaningful impact.

Celebrating the Light Within You

If you've had the honor of receiving a Kukui Nut Lei at one of our events, we say "Mahalo" for being YOU and for making the world a brighter place!
As we continue this beautiful tradition, we encourage everyone to embrace the essence of the Kukui Nut in their daily lives... radiating kindness, leading with compassion, and spreading positivity wherever they go."
